Why Bougatsa of Serres is the Queen
Everyone knows that bougatsa is the trademark of Serres. But have you ever wondered why our bougatsa is considered the best in Greece?
At Agnantio Hotel & Spa, every morning we serve you a piece of history. Let’s see what makes the “bougatsa” experience at our hotel so unique:
1. The Art of the hand-stretched bougatsa phyllo
The secret is hidden in the dough. Serres artisans do not use a rolling pin. The dough is rolled out exclusively by hand, tossing it in the air with skill until it becomes transparent like cigarette paper. This “hand-stretched phyllo” is what gives the bougatsa its incomparable crunch that “breaks” in the mouth, without being heavy.
2. Fresh Serrano Milk
The filling (cream) is not a simple commercial cream. It is made with fresh milk from Serres, a region with a huge tradition in livestock farming. This gives our bougatsa that velvety texture and rich, authentic flavor that remains unforgettable.
3. Aromatic Butter & Baking
The difference lies in the smell! Fine butter is used that is highlighted during baking, creating this golden crust. When the disc comes out of the oven and you hear the characteristic “crunch” as the knife cuts it into small pieces… that’s where the enjoyment begins.
4. A Tradition from Asia Minor
The recipe arrived in our city from refugees from Asia Minor and Byzantium, who developed it in Sidirokastro and Serres. We, at Agnantio, honor this heritage by offering it every morning, warm and steaming.
We are waiting for you at the Agnantio Hotel!
Imagine it: The morning light bathing the room, the sauna waiting for you to relax and on your plate the most authentic bougatsa you have ever tasted.
